Sydenham was once home to the Crystal Palace. The incredible glass and steel structure was originally built in 1851 for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, but it was moved to Sydenham in 1854. The palace was reconstructed in Sydenham Park, which is now called Crystal Palace Park, and hosted exhibitions, concerts, conferences and sporting events… until it burned down in 1936. Fortunately, the park is still open to this day and just as lovely as it was back in the 1850s.
